October is one of the most interesting months to visit Venice. The intense summer heat has disappeared, the biggest summer crowds are gone, but the city is still very active. Restaurants, museums and attractions remain open, and several important cultural events take place during the month.
It is important, however, not to think of October as the true low season. Venice has become an almost year-round destination, and sunny weekends can still be very busy around St Mark’s Square, Rialto and the main vaporetto routes.
Is October Still Tourist Season in Venice?
October is best described as shoulder season. September is still extremely busy, while November normally marks a clearer drop in visitor numbers. In October, especially during the first half of the month, the historic centre can still feel close to high season during weekends and major events.
The advantage is that conditions are much more comfortable for walking. Early mornings and evenings are noticeably quieter, and areas such as Cannaregio, Castello and Dorsoduro can feel very relaxed once the day-trip crowds leave. The second half of October is usually calmer than the first.
Venice Weather in October
October weather is mild but unpredictable. Early in the month, daytime temperatures can still approach 20°C, while by the final week mornings and evenings often feel considerably cooler. Rain is possible throughout the month, and humidity from the lagoon can make 12°C feel colder than the same temperature in a dry climate.

A light waterproof jacket is more useful than a heavy winter coat. Bring layers, comfortable waterproof shoes and a compact umbrella. By late October, a warmer sweater or light insulated jacket is useful after sunset.
Acqua Alta in October
October is also the beginning of the period when acqua alta, Venice’s temporary high-water phenomenon, becomes more relevant. It does not mean that Venice floods continuously throughout autumn, and many visitors will not experience significant high water at all.
When an unusually high tide is expected, warnings and forecasts are published in advance. Piazza San Marco is one of the first major areas affected because it is particularly low, while many other parts of the city remain accessible. Raised walkways may be installed when necessary, so high water rarely means that sightseeing has to stop completely.
Events in Venice in October 2026
October 2026 is unusually good for culture because several major events overlap. The 61st Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition, “In Minor Keys”, continues throughout the month at the Giardini, Arsenale and other locations and remains open until 22 November.
Several other events are worth planning around:
- Venice Design Week — 9–18 October 2026, with exhibitions, workshops and design events around the city.
- Biennale Musica — 10–24 October 2026, the 70th International Festival of Contemporary Music, with concerts and performances at the Arsenale and other venues.
- Venice Marathon — 25 October 2026, ending in the historic city and attracting runners and spectators from many countries.
October therefore has fewer traditional holiday crowds than summer but can become temporarily busy around event venues. Accommodation for the weekends of 10–18 October and the Venice Marathon weekend is worth booking earlier than normal.
Are Hotels Cheaper in October?
Usually yes compared with the busiest periods, but October is not a bargain month in Venice. Current 2026 hotel pricing trends show average rates below September and the most expensive spring periods, but significantly above November and December. Prices also vary enormously according to neighbourhood and event dates.
The first half of October may remain expensive because of the Biennale, Design Week and Biennale Musica. Prices tend to improve later in the month, although the Venice Marathon can push demand up again around 24–25 October. For better value, compare Cannaregio, Castello and Giudecca with hotels immediately around San Marco.
Museums in October
Major museums do not automatically reduce their normal admission prices simply because summer has ended. For example, the standard ticket covering the Doge’s Palace and the other St Mark’s Square museums remains €35, with a cheaper €30 rate available when purchased online sufficiently far in advance.
There can still be seasonal differences in opening hours. The Doge’s Palace remains on its longer April–October schedule until 31 October, while winter hours begin on 1 November. Special late-night openings that operate during summer may already have finished by October.
Do You Have to Pay the Venice Access Fee in October 2026?
No. The Venice Access Fee does not apply at all in October 2026. For 2026, the experimental charge operated only on selected days between 3 April and 26 July. From 27 July onward, visitors can enter the historic city without paying the Access Fee or obtaining an exemption QR code.
Do not confuse this with the tourist tax for overnight stays, which still applies. Visitors staying in hotels, apartments, B&Bs and other accommodation normally pay a local tourist tax for the first five nights. In October, Venice considers it high season for tourist-tax purposes, and the full rate generally ranges from about €1 to €5 per person per night, depending on accommodation type, category and location. Children under 10 are exempt, while children aged 10 to 16 receive a 50% reduction.
What Is Venice Like in October?
October changes the atmosphere of Venice. Instead of escaping the midday heat, you can comfortably spend hours walking through Cannaregio, Castello or Dorsoduro. Foggy mornings, occasional rain and reflections on wet streets can also make the city unusually photogenic.
Evenings become quieter earlier because daylight decreases quickly during the month. Around 1 October, sunset is shortly before 18:00, while by the end of the month it is around 17:00 after the seasonal clock change. This makes October particularly good for seeing Venice illuminated at night without having to stay out very late.
Is October a Good Time to Visit Venice?
For some travellers, October is one of the best months of the year to visit Venice. Temperatures are comfortable, the cultural calendar is strong and crowds are usually easier to manage than during the main summer season.
The main compromises are less predictable weather and the possibility of rain or high tides. If you bring suitable clothing and avoid expecting completely empty streets, October offers an excellent balance between atmosphere, sightseeing conditions and price – especially during the second half of the month.
